6 Standards for Disability Providers | Zeal Disability

6 Standards for Disability Support Services Providers

If you provide services to people with disabilities, there are six standards that apply to you. These standards ensure that people with disabilities receive the best possible service and support. They also help disability service providers to improve their support programs.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these standards through this blog shared by Zeal Disability, provider of quality disability support services in Melbourne.

Standard 1 – Person-Centred Planning

Person-centred planning is a process that helps people with disabilities plan for their future. It starts with getting to know the person and understanding their hopes, dreams, and goals. Then, together, you develop a plan to achieve those goals. This process ensures that the person’s needs and preferences are at the centre of all decision-making.

Standard 2 – Individualised Supports

Individualised supports are services and supports that are specifically tailored to meet the individual’s needs. They are based on the results of the person-centered planning process. Individualised supports can include things like personal care, behaviour support, transportation, and many other types of services.

Standard 3 – Natural Supports and Peer Support

Natural supports are the people and resources that are already in place in the person’s life, like family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Peer support is when people with similar experiences share their knowledge and expertise with each other. Both natural supports and peer support play an important role in disability care services

Standard 4 – Inclusion

Inclusion means that people with disability in Australia have opportunities to participate in all aspects of community life, alongside people without disabilities. This includes things like education, employment, recreation, and social activities. When inclusion is done well, it benefits everyone involved.

Standard 5 – Accessibility

Accessibility means that people with disabilities have equal access to all parts of society—physical locations, communication systems, information technology, etc. This includes things like wheelchair ramps, Braille signage, audio descriptions of movies, and closed captioning on TV shows.

Standard 6 – Continuous Quality Improvement

Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is a process that helps organizations—including disability service providers—identify problems and find solutions so they can continuously improve the quality of their services. CQI involves setting goals, collecting data, analyzing data, taking action based on what you’ve learned, and then repeating the process.
